Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Juvenile Justice Bill.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

130 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Justice when the juvenile justice Bill will be published in view of the fact that the existing legislation dates from 1908; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [4815/95]

The scheme of a juvenile justice Bill is at an advanced stage of preparation in the Department of Justice. The purpose of the proposed legislation is to replace the Children Act, 1908 with a comprehensive new Act that will incorporate into its provisions most aspects of the juvenile justice system.

There will be no delay in publishing the Bill but, because of its size and scope, its implications for other Departments, particularly the Departments of Health and Education, and the time it will take to be drafted, I cannot give a precise date for its publication.
