Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Deployment of Gardaí.

Pat Upton

Question:

141 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí stationed in the Dublin area; the number stationed in the rest of the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5581/95]

The total strength of the force is 10,796. There are 3,983 members of the force based in the Dublin Metropolitan Area, including the DMA headquarters at Harcourt Square. The remainder of the force, 6,813 members, are located throughout the country, including Garda headquarters in the Phoenix Park. I should point out that many of the functions being performed by gardaí attached to both the DMA and Garda headquarters in the Phoenix Park would have a national dimension.

The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the overall deployment of the force throughout the country and the position is kept under continuous review to ensure that all available manpower is being used to best advantage.
