Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 14 Mar 1995

Vol. 450 No. 6

Requests to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 30 from Deputies Michael McDowell and Martin Cullen. I propose to call the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices. I call, first, Deputy Michael McDowell.

I seek leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to consider a matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely the elimination of all the improvement in take-home pay arising from the recent budgetary measures, due to the increases in home loan interest rates.

I call Deputy Martin Cullen.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil, under Standing Order 30, to debate a matter of serious public interest in view of the increase in mortgage interest rates and its effect on thousands of householders, the general increase in interest rates, the falling value of the Irish pound within the ERM and the Government's fiscal policies.

Having considered the matters fully I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motions.

I ask you to reconsider your decision in respect of Deputy Cullen's motion——

We cannot deal with that now.

——in view of the Government's abandonment of any interest rate policy.

The matter has been selected for the Adjournment Debate this evening.

The Government has given up on interest rate policy.

There are other ways in which it can be dealt with.
