Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Harbour Development.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

193 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to improve Cleggan Pier Harbour, in view of the fact that it is the ferry terminal on the mainland for the boats coming to and from Inishbofin Island; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5558/95]

The Department of the Marine can grant-aid certain harbour development works: at local authority or other publicly owned harbours, in the fisheries interest; in commercial harbours subject to the provisions of the Harbours Act, 1946; and in other State-owned harbours owned directly by the Department.

While the pier at Cleggan, County Galway, is part-owned by Galway County Council and the Department of the Marine, there are no plans at present to undertake development works there. The funding available for works at local harbours such as Cleggan is particularly limited and, therefore, it is difficult to see how any development works can be undertaken in the immediate future.
