Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

52 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Taoiseach the percentage of the working population, both nationally and in County Galway, which is at present unemployed. [5610/95]

The unemployment rate — i.e. the number of unemployed as a percentage of the total labour force, calculated according to ILO guidelines — was 15.7 per cent in April 1993. This estimate is based on the 1993 labour force survey. While regional estimates are available from this survey, estimates are not made at county level. The estimated unemployment rate for the West Planning Region — i.e. counties Galway and Mayo — in 1993 was 16.4 per cent.

The corresponding estimated unemployment rate for April, 1994 is 14.9 per cent but no subnational breakdown of the 1994 estimate is available at present.
