Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Tax Revenue.

Liam Aylward

Question:

95 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for the Environment the revenue received by each individual county in Ireland for road tax; the corresponding level of road grant from his Department to each county including grants for national primary and regional/ secondary roads; and the amount of funding from EU funds allocated to each county. [5421/95]

Details of the amounts of road tax collected by each licensing authority in 1993, the latest year for which confirmed figures are available, are set out in the reply to Question No. 101 of 19 October 1994. The figures for 1994 are being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

Details of grant payments made to local authorities for national primary and national secondary roads for 1993 are set out in the reply to Questions Nos. 169, 170, 171 and 172 of 15 November 1994. Grant payments in respect of national roads in 1994 were a matter for the National Roads Authority.

Details of grant payments made to local authorities for non-national roads in 1993 are contained in the reply to Question No. 72 of 24 May 1994, and for 1994, in the reply to Question No. 101 of 31 January 1995.

Funding for EU assisted road projects is provided, in the first instance, from the Exchequer under the Public Capital Programme. The approved costs of the projects involved are met by State road grants allocated to local authorities by the National Roads Authority, in the case of national roads, and by my Department in the case of specific non-national road improvement projects. The EU assistance for co-financed road development is paid to the Department of Finance and is remitted to the Exchequer in part recoupment of the State road grants.
