Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Provision of Play Centre.

Tony Gregory

Question:

114 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if he will review the decision to refuse Dublin Corporation the necessary initial funding to replace the children's play centre at Sheriff Street, Dublin 1, in view of the fact that the existing facility and various children's play amenities will be lost due to redevelopment very shortly and as funding is required now to start work on replacement facilities, the cost of which could be recouped form the sale of the flats at a later stage. [5893/95]

The corporation was recently advised by my Department that there were no funds available to the Department to make a contribution towards the cost of the provision of the play centre in the Sheriff Street area. Special grants of £660,000 have already been approved for the provision of other community facilities in the area. The corporation has been informed that there would be no objection to its funding the play centre from capital resources, such as receipts from land sales, sale of the flats, etc. It was also indicated to the corporation that, in the event of its not being in a position to fund the facility from its own resources, a loan application could be approved.
