Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Higher Education Development.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

145 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Education, arising from the conclusions of the technical working group on the future development of higher education systems, if she has satisfied herself with its conclusions regarding the case for an independent autonomous Mayo Regional Technical College; and if she will make available the background document entitled The Regional Pattern of Access to Higher Education in Ireland regarding the proposition for the provision of additional third level facilities in certain locations. [6034/95]

I will be considering the future of the higher education sector generally, including the Mayo area, in the context of the findings of the steering committee which I set up under the aegis of the Higher Education Authority to advise me on this matter.

I have received, for my information, the interim report of the technical working group to the steering committee, which represents a valuable contribution to the work of the steering committee. I look forward to receiving the steering committee's report and recommendations, together with the views of the Higher Education Authority, before outlining my plans for the sector.

In relation to the background document referred to by the Deputy, I would refer him to the Higher Education Authority from which, I understand, copies will be available shortly.
