Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Barring Orders.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

158 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice the number of barring orders granted in each of the years 1988 to 1994. [5806/95]

Court statistics are compiled on the basis of the legal year which runs from 1 August to 31 July.

Records show that the number of barring orders granted by the District Court in each of the years 1987-88 to 1993-94 were as follows:

Legal Year

Barring Orders Granted

1987-88

1,283

1988-89

1,129

1989-90

1,708

1990-91

1,915

1991-92

2,000

1992-93

2,081

1993-94

2,010

Records show that the number of barring orders granted by the Circuit Court in 1987-88 was 81 and in 1988-89 was 90.
Information on the number of barring orders granted by the Circuit Court in 1989-90 and subsequent legal years is not readily available. However, I am making arrangements for such statistics to be compiled. These statistics will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as they become available.
