Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Free Travel Pass Query.

Tony Gregory

Question:

170 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will review the decision to refuse a travel pass to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 9, who was brain damaged 18 years ago and who is now in receipt of a reduced Garda pension. [5766/95]

Free travel is available to every resident of the State aged 66 years and over and also to incapacitated people who are in receipt of certain qualifying welfare payments in respect of their incapacity.

The person concerned is under 66 years of age and is not in receipt of any payment from the Department of Social Welfare. He is in receipt of an occupational pension which is not a qualifying payment for the purposes of the free travel scheme.

In the current circumstances, it is not possible to award a travel pass in this case. However I am having a review undertaken to consider ways in which people with disabilities can be more effectively catered for under this scheme.
