Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Donegal Television Channels.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

219 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the fact that his Department has allocated television channels in the Donegal area which effectively have made it impossible for viewers in the Malin area to view United Kingdom channels such as UTV and BBC 1. [6108/95]

RTE has installed a new station in Malin to provide improved RTE reception to that area, and in some cases, to provide an RTE signal where it was not previously available. The frequencies for that station have been allocated in accordance with international agreement and national planning requirements. In doing so every effort was made to preserve direct off-air reception of UK channels where that was available. I understand that the new station has caused some interference with fringe off-air reception of some UK channels in the area. RTE is continuing this installation work at the moment and will make every effort to minimise such interference, including visiting viewers and television dealers in the area to advise them as to the best way to preserve all signals. However, it may not be possible to reconcile the provision of national television services with continued direct reception of UK channels in every case.
