Vol. 450 No. 8

Written Answers. - Regional Tourism Organisations.

James McDaid

Question:

29 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he will nominate one person from the Caravan and Camping Council to each of the regional tourism organisations in view of the important part it plays in that section of tourism in this country. [3716/95]

My predecessor initiated a reform in the corporate structures of the regional tourism organisations the object of which was to improve their effectiveness through the establishment of new slimmed-down boards of management and county tourism committees. The new boards of management and county tourism committees are composed of panels drawn from the multiplicity of organisations who are members of the RTOs. In accordance with the articles of association for the regional organisations the constituent groups in each of the designated panels are charged with the key task of nominating or electing their representatives to serve on these boards and committees.

For the purpose of membership on the boards of management the caravan and camping sector is grouped with hotels and guesthouses. This is the only category empowered to elect two representatives to serve on the boards. In addition, the caravan and camping sector has separate representation on each county tourism committee. Any alteration in the current categories from which members are drawn is a matter in the first instance for the individual regional tourism organisations.
