Tony Killeen

Question:

185 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade his views on Forbairt's export projections for indigenous industry for the next five years. [5921/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 185 together.

As I announced recently at the launch of ABT's annual review and outlook for 1994-95, the Government has set the agency a target of increasing non-food indigenous exports, the sector for which it is responsible, to £6 billion by 1999. I am satisfied based on the export performance of this sector in recent years, projected growth in our main markets, and the level of support available to Irish exporters under the EU co-funded market development programme for the period 1994-99, that this target is realistic and attainable.

As regards the exports projections recently released by Forbairt, which operates under the aegis of the Department of Enterprise and Employment, I understand that these encompass a much wider spectrum of enterprises than those covered by the ABT targets, extending to food, meat and other companies which do not come within the trade board's remit.
