Vol. 451 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Compensation Acts.

Michael McDowell

Question:

66 Mr. M. McDowell asked the Minister for Justice, in respect of each of the years from 1984 to 1994, the number of claimants under the Garda Síochána Compensation Acts; the number of applications made to the courts; the number of cases in which the applicants succeeded; the total amount of compensation awarded by the court in each year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6655/95]

As I have informed the House before, the situation in which I found myself on becoming Minister for Justice was one where the compilation of statistics had a relatively low priority because of other more pressing matters. I am having the matter reviewed with the intention of causing significant improvements in this area of my responsibility.

The information which is available is contained in the following table which shows the number of applications, the number of awards by the High Court and the total compensation paid, including the applicants legal costs, in each of the years 1986 to 1994: relevant statistics for 1984 and 1985 are not readily available.

The cases shown in column (2) are not necessarily represented also in column (3) — because of the delay which can sometimes occur between the actual application and subsequent court hearing.
