Vol. 451 No. 3

Written Answers. - New Shannon/London Carrier.

Tony Killeen

Question:

73 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the action, if any, he is taking to attract a new scheduled Shannon/London carrier. [6549/95]

Since 1 January 1993 any European Union carrier can fly on any international route within the EU and without any restriction on frequency, provided slots are available at airports. The question of whether any EU airline wishes to exercise such rights is, however, entirely a matter for the airline to decide on the basis of its own commercial judgment.

As regards traffic through Shannon airport, a new marketing body for that airport, Shannon Airport Marketing, was established with effect from 1 October 1994. The objective of this new organisation, which is funded jointly by my Department and the Tourism Operational Programme, is to increase traffic through Shannon airport through vigorous promotion of the airport in overseas markets, including the UK market.
