Vol. 451 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax Relief.

Liam Aylward

Question:

57 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the scheme announced in the budget which will give a vehicle registration tax relief of £1,000 where a car which is at least ten years old is scrapped and the owner purchases a new vehicle. [6660/95]

In my Budget Statement of 8 February, 1995, I announced that I intended to introduce a scheme which will give a vehicle registration tax relief of £1,000 where a car at least ten years old is scrapped and the owner purchases a new vehicle. The proposed measure will be once-off, running from 1 July 1995 to the end of next year. It will apply in relation to those older cars which, at the time of purchase of the new car, have been road taxed and insured by the purchaser of the new car over the previous two-year period.

Further details of the scheme will be provided in the Finance Bill to be published next month.
