Vol. 451 No. 6

Written Answers. - Vehicle Registration Tax Relief.

Pat Upton

Question:

47 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Finance the effect, if any, on employment in the motor industry of his budget proposal to give a vehicle registration tax relief of £1,000 when a ten year old car is scrapped and the owner purchases a new vehicle. [6763/95]

It is not possible to make any reliable estimate of the likely impact of this scheme on employment in the motor industry. I would point out, however, that schemes of this nature have been employed with success in other countries. Moreover, given the level of public interest displayed, as evidenced by the number of inquiries to my Department since I announced the initiative in the budget, I would expect that the scheme should provide a useful boost to the motor industry during its intended 18 months period of operation, commencing on 1 July next.
