Vol. 451 No. 6

Written Answers. - Civil Service Reward Scheme.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

62 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance if he will devise a reward system for public servants such as the scheme currently operated in sections of the private sector for no sick leave days during the working year. [5874/95]

My responsibility in this matter does not extend to the wider public service. However, in so far as the Civil Service is concerned, there are adequate incentives in their conditions of employment for officers to keep their sick leave to a minimum. The rate of sick absence which is estimated at approximately 33.5 per cent of working days per person annually compares favourably with the absence rate in other employments.

In the circumstances, it is my view that no useful purpose would be served by the introduction of such a scheme.
