Charlie McCreevy

Question:

42 Mr. McCreevy asked the Minister for Education the number of retired primary teachers in the age brackets 65 to 70, 70 to 75, 75 to 80, 80 to 85 and over 85; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7944/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 42 together.

I regret that the information sought by the Deputies is not readily available in my Department. Prior to 1 January 1993 the age of individual pensioned primary teachers was generally not recorded on the computer system for retired teachers. Details of the date of birth of teachers who retired prior to 1993 are held on the paper or manual files for each individual teacher. The information sought by the Deputies would take some time to compile as it would require the examination of over 5,000 manual files and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. There are currently 5,463 retired primary teachers in receipt of pension.
