Vol. 453 No. 1

Written Answers. - Storage of Radioactive Waste.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

65 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if plans to build a store for radioactive materials in the grounds of Beaumont Hospital are to proceed; and if so, the guarantees he can give that there will be no negative impact on those living near the hospital. [9021/95]

Limerick East): The arrangements for the storage of radioactive waste arising from the administration of healthcare in hospitals are the responsibility of the individual hospital authorities. These responsibilities are discharged under licences issued by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII).

Beaumont Hospital has applied to Dublin Corporation for planning permission to build a new and improved store for radioactive waste. The policy of my Department is that the highest standards of safety and security should be maintained in relation to these arrangements, and the role of the RPII is to ensure, through its licensing conditions, that the arrangements are satisfactory.
