Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Request for Garda Patrols.

Tony Gregory

Question:

149 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if she will have arrangements made with the Garda at the Bridewell, Dublin 7, to ensure that there is ongoing co-operation with the local residents who have requested Garda patrols to prevent unruly youths congregating in the vicinity of Kevin Barry House/Coleraine Street, Dublin 7, after 11 p.m. nightly. [9352/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that as a result of a request from the residents of Kevin Barry House, a member of the Garda Síochána from the Bridewell Garda Station met them on 4 April, 1995. A number of issues were raised and concern was expressed about youths congregating in the vicinity late at night. Also, it was indicated that the residents were in the process of forming their own residents' association and they were assured of complete co-operation from the gardaí in this worthwhile venture. A garda has been appointed from the neighbourhood police unit to liaise with this group of residents and to continue to have ongoing meetings to discuss various issues of mutual concern.

Night patrols have been instructed to pay special attention to the area and to use their powers under the Public Order Act to disperse the youths in question.

The Garda authorities continue to monitor the situation and will take whatever operational measures are deemed necessary to deal with this problem.
