Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Disability Schemes Funding.

Mary Wallace

Question:

151 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the amount and nature of all spending within her Department and by bodies under her Department's aegis on schemes specifically directed towards meeting the needs of people with disabilities. [9383/95]

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Government's policy agreement, A Government of Renewal, indicates, in paragraph 67, that the Government intend to undertake wide innovation to improve physical access to information and rights for both able-bodied citizens and those with a disability.

As regards services provided generally by my Department to the public, the position is that the information maintained by my Department in relation to expenditure does not distinguish expenditure specifically directed towards meeting the needs of people with disabilities from expenditure generally. In relation to the accessibility of buildings under my Department's aegis to staff with disabilities, the relevant provision dealing with this issue is in the Civil Service code of practice for the employment of people with disabilities, published in March 1994.

In any new building projects being undertaken by my Department, or by the Office of Public Works on behalf of my Department, the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account.
