Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - French Presidential Elections.

Noel Davern

Question:

65 Mr. Davern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs his views on whether any policy changes will ensue following on the recent Presidential elections in France. [9336/95]

I would like to express my congratulations to President Chirac on his election as President of France and to my colleague, Mr. Alain Juppé, on his recent appointment as Prime Minister. I look forward to fruitful co-operation between our two Governments on the many challenging issues which will face us over the coming years. I expect that as with any change of Gvoernment, there will, of course, be issues which the new Government will approach differently to the previous administration but I would not wish to speculate on such matters until the programme and policy of the new Government is clear. Ireland and France have many areas of common interest and we will seek to build on the existing good relationship in our historical relations and in working together in the European Union, in particular in preparation for our Presidency of the Council and of the Inter-Governmental Conference in 1996.
