Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Elective Surgery.

James Leonard

Question:

85 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Health the proportion, if any, of elective surgery now carried out on a day care basis. [9347/95]

Limerick East): Surgical operations and other procedures performed in an in-patient setting in public acute hospitals are reported via the hospital inpatient inquiry system or HIPE. The overall coverage to date for 1994 is 73 per cent for day cases and 94 per cent for inpatients, excluding day cases. Taking coverage into account it is estimated that between 35 per cent and 40 per cent of elective surgery cases are carried out on a day basis.
