Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Allocation of Beds to Cluain Mhuire.

Helen Keogh

Question:

91 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Health if he will re-examine the allocation of beds to Cluain Mhuire, St. John of God's, to ensure that the existing high demand and intake can be accommodated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7666/95]

Limerick East): Cluain Mhuire, St. John of God's provides a community-based mental health service located in the south-east of Dublin-Dún Laoghaire on an agency basis for the Eastern Health Board which is responsible for the provision of psychiatric services in the area. The service is supported by the purchase of acute in-patient beds in St. John of God's Hospital, Stillorgan, which is a private psychiatric hospital. The budget for the Cluain Mhuire service in the current year is approximately £4.7 million which on a per capita basis compares favourably with other psychiatric services in the Eastern Health Board area.

I am aware that in the first quarter of 1995 there was an increase in admissions to the hospital from the Cluain Mhuire service. However, discussions have taken place between the Order and the Eastern Health Board and I understand that admissions have since declined.
