Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Development of Grand Canal.

Pat Upton

Question:

94 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the estimated cost of developing the Grand Canal as proposed in the Grand Canal corridor study; and the estimated value of the benefits arising from such a development. [9175/95]

The Grand Canal corridor study identified a strategy and proposals for the development of the canal corridor from the Grand Canal Dock to the Lucan Road Bridge. The study did not include a cost-benefit analysis and therefore the details requested by the Deputy are not available. Implementation of the strategy and proposals contained in the report will involve State, local authority, community and private sector input. The costs arising will depend on the type of development actually undertaken. Based on the experience in other countries, the benefits arising from a successful development of the canal corridor will include the integration of the canal into the local environment and community as part of our living heritage while developing the corridor through mixed development — residential, leisure and business uses — carefully planned side by side, all taking advantage of a waterside setting, and with substantial job creation.

The report did recommend the establishment of a task force, to be co-ordinated by my Department, and which would include representatives of the public sector agencies involved in the canal corridor. I am delighted to advise the Deputy that in January of this year, I established the Grand Canal corridor task force under the chairmanship of Senator Pat Magner. The role of this task force is to co-ordinate and monitor the activities of the various agencies responsible for the development of the corridor, and to provide the necessary impetus for the implementation of the strategy and proposals.
