Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Building Accessibility Regulations.

Mary Wallace

Question:

106 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for the Environment if he is monitoring compliance with the accessibility requirements of the 1991 building regulations; the level of compliance with these regulations; whether these regulations extend to the public areas of apartment buildings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9372/95]

Responsibility for overseeing and monitoring compliance with the building regulations, including the provisions dealing with accessibility, rests with building control authorities. There is no information available to me which would suggest that the regulations are not being complied with.

Provisions relating to accessibility apply to the common areas of all apartment buildings; these include a requirement for the provision of lifts in buildings above certain sizes. The provisions apply to new buildings as well as to extensions and major alterations.
