Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Policing of Area.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

142 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Justice if she will respond to comments from residents in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 16 that the levels of policing in the area are not sufficient to combat the rising incidence of crime; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10157/95]

The deployment of the Force to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. The area referred to by the Deputy is policed by gardaí from Dundrum station where the present strength is 59. A community garda is assigned to the area mentioned in the question and I understand that there is close liaison between gardaí at Dundrum and the local community.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that some of the problems in the area can be attributed to underage drinking and there is occasional trouble, including criminal damage, after discos at weekends. Mobile patrols from Dundrum station pay particular attention to the area at such times in an effort to target and prevent crime, especially criminal damage.

The policing arrangements for the area are kept under constant review to ensure maximum service to the public. The Garda authorities are satisfied with the present arrangements but the situation will be kept under continuous review and any adjustments considered necessary will be made.
