Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

144 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to increase the number of gardaí assigned to County Mayo and the individual districts therein considering the substantial increase in crime levels experienced by the population recently. [10170/95]

The deployment of the Force to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the present strength of the Mayo division is 251.

I am also informed that the strength of the Mayo division is continually monitored and reviewed by the Garda authorities with a view to ensuring that personnel are deployed effectively throughout the division. The Garda authorities are satisfied that the present strength of the Mayo division meets the policing needs of the area but they will continue to monitor the situation carefully and will make adjustments where deemed necessary.
