Vol. 454 No. 1

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a Notice of Motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Sargent. I now call on Deputy Sargent to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

In the light of the decision by the board of the Irish Press plc to liquidate the company with the loss of 600 jobs. I seek leave to move Standing Order 30 so that this House can properly direct the Government to actively intervene in the crisis and to enable this House to analyse the expressions of empathy with the Irish Press group, its journalistic tradition and its staff in general so that this empathy might become a constructive proposal to create an Irish Press trust with support from the credit union and trade union movements and the workers within the group in a three way co-operative venture.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order. Therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
