Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Furniture.

John Browne

Question:

36 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made in relation to school furniture arising from the commitment given in the reply to Question No. 4 of 13 October 1994. [10092/95]

My Department has examined the detailed information made available by the Deputy and other interested parties relating to the benefits of sloped over flat-top desks in schools. While the information provides some evidence that sloped desks are more beneficial, it is by no means conclusive or overwhelming. However, I am prepared to allow schools the option of requesting the provision of sloped desks in accordance with the specified standards where new furniture is being provided in future.

My Department will draw the attention of furniture designers-suppliers to this provision and inform schools which are being supplied with furniture from now on that this option may be exercised if they so wish.
