Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bicycle Grant.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

38 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Education if a bicycle grant is still in operation for students who are eligible for school transport in isolated areas; when the last bicycle grant was paid; and if a similar type scheme exists for students on islands and gaeltacht areas. [9785/95]

The bicycle grant was payable towards the cost of bicycles for primary school children who were eligible for free school transport but for whom no transport service was available. It could only be paid in cases of extreme hardship. The last payment of the grant was in September 1985. It has now lapsed, and is no longer operational in any area.

However, there is provision under the terms of the school transport scheme for payment of a remote area grant towards the cost of private transport arrangements. This grant is payable to eligible children who live outside the range of a school transport service. The scheme operates on a countrywide basis, including islands and Gaeltacht areas, where the conditions for eligibility are met.
