Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Waterford School.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

42 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education, in view of the projected figures for a school (details supplied) in County Waterford for the school year 1995-96 and subsequent years, if she will allow the appointment of a third assistant teacher, even on a temporary basis to overcome the staffing and pupil-teacher ratio problems that are likely to arise. [10257/95]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year.

The total enrolment of the school referred to by the Deputy, on 30 September 1994, was 88 pupils, which warrants a staffing in the 1995-96 school year of a principal and two assistants.

I regret that it will not be possible to depart from agreed procedures in this case. Accordingly, the post of third assistant will be suppressed at the end of the current school year. The teacher in question has been given the option of having her name placed on the diocesan panel for redeployment, which will not take place before 1 September 1995.

I should also point out to the Deputy that the school has the services of a shared remedial teacher.

If the school is in breach of the maximum class size guidelines in the 1995-96 school year, the school authorities should submit enrolments to my Department in September 1995.
