Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Condition of School.

Tony Gregory

Question:

60 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education the assistance, if any, she can give to St. Gabriel Boys' Primary School, Cowper Street, Dublin 7, to improve conditions at this school. [9797/95]

There are two primary schools in Cowper Street, Dublin 7, St. Gabriel's Boys and St. Gabriel's Girls. I am aware that conditions, particularly in the boys' school, are unsatisfactory.

Officials from my Department met recently with the management authorities of the schools to discuss the question of amalgamation and the need to improve conditions generally for the schools.

Arising from these discussions my Department has undertaken to examine and identify what additional resources and improvements to the school buildings are needed to address educational disadvantage in the schools, with a view to immediate requirements being in place by September.

My Department's primary inspectorate is currently investigating the need for a special unit or class in the boys' school, for children with emotional and behavioural problems. I will inform the Deputy of the outcome as soon as the investigations have been completed.
