Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Meath Flooding.

Colm M. Hilliard

Question:

72 Mr. Hilliard asked the Minister for Finance if finance has been provided to the Office of Public Works in 1995 to relieve the ongoing problem of the river Nanny flooding at Duleek, County Meath; when work will commence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10135/95]

Duleek is one of the nine areas which are subject to periodical localised flooding where there is an urgent need to undertake relief work and in respect of which the Commissioners of Public Works have sufficient data available to enable the design of a flood relief scheme to commence immediately. The Commissioners are in the process of engaging consulting engineers to design the scheme. It is intended to commence work on the proposed scheme as quickly as possible subject to the results of the environmental impact assessment and cost benefit analysis being satisfactory and to funds being available.

The Government has already decided to introduce a Supplementary Estimate for the Office of Public Works to defray costs incurred by that office arising from the bad weather earlier this year. This will include the 1995 cost of any flood relief schemes commenced this year.
