Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Horse Racing.

Liam Burke

Question:

169 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the views, if any, he has on the differences between the relevant organisations governing and marketing horse racing; the further views, if any, he has on whether the present climate is conducive to the promotion of the sport in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10503/95]

I assume the question refers to media reports of differences of opinions between the Irish Horseracing Authority and the Turf Club on certain items. The statutory functions of both bodies are set out in the Irish Horseracing Industry Act, 1994.

Differences of opinion between bodies during the course of discussions on operational matters, especially those which affect the bodies directly, are not unusual. I believe, however, that any possible differences of opinions on matters relating to the horseracing industry, can be resolved through discussion. The objective is the progressive improvement in the horse breeding and racing sector. I know the Irish Horseracing Authority and the Turf Club are fully committed to that objective. The various interests in the thoroughbred industry are represented on the Authority and differing views on the detail of how that objective is to be met should, therefore, be capable of being resolved around the Authority board.
