Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Compassionate Leave Refusal.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

87 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will request the British authorities to reconsider the case of a person (details supplied) who has been refused compassionate leave by the Northern Ireland Office to visit his daughter who is suffering from cancer. [10567/95]

I am aware of the background to this unfortunate case and I have had the matter raised with the British authorities through the Anglo-Irish Secretariat. The British side have responded that compassionate home leave has been granted to the person in question on several occasions over the last year. They say that they are keeping in regular contact with the medical authorities regarding his daughter's condition, and that their approach to further requests for leave in this case will be based on the latest medical reports. I can assure the Deputy that I will continue to keep the case under review and to urge the British authorities to operate these arrangements in as humane and flexible a manner as possible.
