Vol. 454 No. 3

Written Answers. - Policing Airports.

Tony Killeen

Question:

135 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has for policing at Irish airports. [10685/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are Garda sub-stations at Dublin and Shannon airports and that a permanent Garda presence is provided at Cork Airport from Anglesea Street Garda station. They inform me that there is a total of 57 members of the Force permanently attached to these airports. These members perform duties in relation to immigration and security. In the other airports in the State, these duties are performed by gardaí from within the district where the airport is located.

The policing arrangements at airports are, of course, a matter for the Garda authorities and like all operational arrangements within the Force are regularly subject to review. These arrangements are currently being reviewed by the Garda authorities but they inform me that there are no plans at present to alter the number of gardaí attached to these units. Any other changes that may be considered necessary by the Garda authorities will be implemented on a phased basis and will involve discussions with the members' representative associations.
