Vol. 454 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Bed Closures.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

113 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to close hospital beds during the summer of 1995; and the number of any such closures. [10999/95]

Limerick East): As the Deputy will be aware, the suspension from use of some hospital beds over the summer months has been characteristic of the provision and organisation of hospital services throughout the country for many years. Seasonal closures are usually planned to coincide with a period when staff are on annual leave and when the level of activity has traditionally declined. In addition, this period is often used as an opportunity to refurbish wards. All emergency and urgent services, of course, continue to be provided during this period.

Any decision on the level of bed closures during the summer months is a matter for the health boards and hospitals concerned in the first instance. As in other years, my Department will be monitoring the situation closely and will remain in constant touch with health agencies about this matter.
