Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Removal of Animals.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

111 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Justice the livestock, if any, which have been removed from the property of a person (details supplied) in County Limerick either by her Department, the Department of Finance, through the Revenue Commissioners, or the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for disease eradication since January 1980; the number of livestock removed; the location to which the livestock were sent; the value of the livestock; and the person who received the money which was realised from the livestock. [11646/95]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that following the conviction of the person in question on a number of charges, including cruelty to animals, three animals were removed in 1994 from his property on the order of the court.

The court also ordered that the monies realised from the sale of the animals be paid over to the District Court Clerk, Mallow, and, after expenses had been deducted, that the balance be paid to the person from whom the animals had been seized. A cheque in the amount of £2,775.53 was subsequently sent to the District Court Clerk by Galtee Meats, Charleville. Having deducted expenses, an amount of £1,494 now falls to be paid to the person in question.
I am informed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry that their records show that £4,490 in grants issued to the herd owner in question in respect of 20 animals removed under the Brucellosis eradication scheme in the early 1980s.
As regards the Revenue Commissioners, my Department has been informed by that agency that they have not removed any livestock from the person in question.
