Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Prison Officer Recruitment.

Seán Haughey

Question:

114 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if prison officers will be recruited in 1995, 1996 and subsequent years in view of recent announcements in relation to a public sector recruitment embargo; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11643/95]

The Government decision in relation to public service numbers provide that recruitment can take place to maintain the level of staff complements as on 9 June 1995 and that offers of appointment made by 9 June will be honoured. Recruitment of prison service personnel will take place on that basis.

The question of filling additional posts requires specific Government approval and I will bring forward my proposals, if necessary, in accordance with this requirement.
