Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Recruits Deployment.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

118 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for Justice her policy towards deployment of Garda recruits on leave from Templemore; and whether some recruits could be stationed in tourist resorts such as Westport during the summer months to improve available manpower levels in view of the increased population in these resorts. [11777/95]

Trainee, recruit, gardaí do not possess Garda powers until attestation after 62 weeks training. At that time they are allocated permanently to stations by the Garda Commissioner. Such allocations are made having regard to the needs of each division.

The Garda authorities inform me that many factors are taken into account when deploying the force such as increases in population in tourist resorts during the summer months. The deployment of personnel resources within any division is a matter for the divisional officer who ensures that Garda manpower is deployed to meet changing needs and circumstances.
