Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cattle Identification System.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

159 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of tags which will be involved in the new cattle tagging and identification system; if up to three tags will be required for some cattle; and if his Department will carry the full cost of introducing the new cattle identification system. [11802/95]

Arrangements to introduce the new cattle identification system required by Council Directive 92/102/EEC on the identification and registration of animals are being finalised and should be in place shortly. To ensure a smooth transfer between the existing and new identification schemes, two new tags will be used alongside the existing tag inserted for disease eradication purposes as a transitional measure. The question of payment for this new system of cattle identification is still under consideration.
