Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - “Democratic Dialogue” Discussions.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

21 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will participate in and submit the views of the Government to Northern Ireland's first independent social, economic and political body which was recently launched in Belfast and which is known as Democratic Dialogue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11707/95]

We believe the process of reconciliation in Northern Ireland will be enhanced by dialogue at every level. Accordingly, we welcome the recent establishment of "Democratic Dialogue", which aims to encourage new thinking on a range of important issues of relevance to the problem of Northern Ireland.

The valuable work of the Opsahl Commission indicated the scope which exists for fresh perspectives and insights into the challenges which face all of us on this island.

The Government will be happy to cooperate with Democratic Dialogue and to respond to requests for its views on issues in which the organisation takes an interest.
