Brendan Smith

Question:

45 Mr. B. Smith asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the follow up to the Washington Investment Conference in the form of investment missions to the Border counties which is proposed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11751/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 22 and 45 together.

Discussions with the United States authorities are continuing with a view to the setting of dates for a visit by President Clinton to Ireland, North and South.

The Government looks forward very much to welcoming the President to Ireland. Naturally, we hope that he will be able to see as much as possible of the country, including Border areas, while he is here. However, at this very preliminary stage, it is not possible to indicate the President's itinerary, which will, inevitably be subject to time constraints.
The White House Conference for Trade and Investment in Ireland was the beginning of a process intended to highlight the attractions of investment in both the Border counties and Northern Ireland. The relevant US authorities are planning follow-up in the form of sector-specific missions which will bring potential US investors to these areas over the coming months. It is hoped that the first of these missions can be arranged for the autumn of this year. The Government and its agencies will lend these follow-up activities every support.
