Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anomaly in Grant Aid to Irish Speaking Islands.

Mary Harney

Question:

39 Miss Harney asked the Taoiseach the reason there is a discrepancy in State grant aid to Irish-speaking islands as opposed to English-speaking islands; and the plans, if any, he has to rectify this anomaly. [11920/95]

In line with previous administrations, this Government recognises the unique position of the Irish language and culture in Irish society and the integral and creative role it plays in defining our Irish identity. Accordingly, it is the Government's policy to continue to lead and support initiatives which promote the use of Irish and the development of Irish culture.

The preservation of Irish as a vernacular language is a basic aim of the various schemes being administered by the Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and also Údarás na Gaeltachta. The Department of Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and Údarás na Gaeltachta have special responsibilities in relation to Gaeltacht islands in the context of their overall responsibilities for the Gaeltacht.

The report of the Interdepartmental Committee on Island Development, of which I am Chairman, will be available shortly and will address the issues of Government policy with regard to the support for island communities generally.
