Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Means Assessment.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

76 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the benefits under the aegis of his Department where separate means tests are applied; the plans, if any, he has for a single means assessment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11650/95]

My Department has responsibilities in relation to the scheme of civil legal aid and advice which is operated by the Legal Aid Board. Legal services are available under the scheme to persons who meet certain criteria including a means test. The question of a single means test which would be common to public service schemes is one of the matters under review by an interdepartmental committee, established to oversee the development of an integrated social services system. The Legal Aid Board is represented on that committee which is the responsibility of the Department of Social Welfare. The application of any decisions taken in this area will be announced in due course.
