Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Driving Test Delays.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

87 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a delay of six to eight months in getting driving tests in Galway; the action, if any, he intends to take to rectify this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11766/95]

Since early 1995 the maximum waiting period for a driving test in Galway has varied between 16 and 21 weeks. The maximum is about 19 weeks at present but a significant proportion of applicants have their tests in a shorter time. In the four weeks ending mid June some 15 per cent of applicants had their test within five weeks of applying. Early tests can be arranged where employment, business or other urgent considerations are involved.

Three driver testers in the Galway region who had retired have only recently been replaced and further driver testers are now being appointed. Every effort will be made over the coming months to reduce the waiting time in Galway and elsewhere to more acceptable levels.
