153 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Marine if it is the policy of his Department to grant aquaculture licences in the Carlingford Lough area for the cultivation of oysters and bottom mussels to individual persons; if so, the legislation or regulations under which this is authorised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Ahern asked the Minister for the Marine the identities and addresses of the individuals, companies, co-operatives and other entities who are the current holders of foreshore licences and aquaculture licences for the cultivation of oysters and bottom mussels along the south side of Carlingford Lough in the townland of North Commons up to the Two Mile River; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In line with overall policy objectives for the aquaculture industry applications from individuals and enterprises are granted if all the necessary technical and other criteria are met and depending on the outcome of the public consultative process involved.

To date five licences have been granted to five shellfish operators in Carlingford Lough. The licensees are as follows:

My statutory powers in relation to shellfish farming derive from the Fisheries Acts and the Foreshore Act, 1933.
