Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Facilities for the Disabled.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

84 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform when his proposals to make accessibility to all State services inclusive for those with disability will be implemented; whether Bus Átha Cliath and Bus Éireann are included; and, if so, if he will give a timetable for change for those companies in order to ensure that old rolling stock can be replaced with buses that are accessible. [12405/95]

The equal status legislation which I intend to introduce will cover discrimination on grounds of disability in services, including State services and transport. It would be premature for me to give specific details at this stage because the proposals have not been finalised.

My Department is represented on the Interdepartmental Transport Accessibility Committee, which operates under the aegis of the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. In addition, the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities has established a transport mobility working group to consider this general question. I will take the views of these bodies into account.
